Molecular and Industrial Biotechnology Group :

imatge grup gbmiThe group of Molecular and Industrial Biotechnology (GBMI) combines multidisciplinary expertise in basic and applied research in the field of biotechnology, molecular biology, polymer engineering and genetic engineering. GBMI develops new approaches and innovative solutions in response to industrial and biomedical demands. The group provides biotech alternatives for material development and improvement of industrial processes in terms of efficiency, environmental impact, energy consumption and product performance.  

GBMI consolidates the following research lines:

  • Applied Biotechnology - Bio-tools, bio-processes and bio-materials used for coatings and surface functionalisation, cosmetic formulations, bioactive and composite materials, medical and diagnostic devices, antimicrobial and antibiofilm strategies and nano/micro drug delivery systems.

  • Molecular Biotechnology -  Identification of pharmacological targets and novel therapeutic approaches based on membrane proteins.

GBMI facilities :

GBMI counts with 400 m2 of well-equipped laboratories and state-of-the-art experimental and analytical equipment to support the interdisciplinary research of the group.

Specific equipment available in the group includes:

  • Analytical equipment - UV-Vis and reflectance measuring spectrophotometers and fluorescence spectrophotometer with temperature control, microplate readers of absorbance, fluorescence, and luminescence, chromatographic equipment (HPLC, FPLC), microscopy (Optical and Fluorescence Microscope), electrochemical equipment, rheometre.

  • Nano/Micro particle Production - Ultrasound equipment, benchtop bioreactor, high-pressure homogenizer, low temperature chamber, multi vessel reactor, ultracentrifuges, lyophilisation unit, ultra-refrigerating unit.

  • Particle Analyzers - Dynamic Light Scattering Analyzer (DLS), Nanoparticle Tracking Analysis (NTA) equipment, Zeta potential analyser (Zetasizer).

  • Equipment for coatings preparation and surface characterization - dip coater multi vessel system, Langmuir-Blodgett equipment, Crystal Quartz Microbalance with Dissipation monitoring (QCM-D), Contact Angle and Surface Free energy measuring device.

  • Molecular and cellular biology equipment - SDS-PAGE electrophoresis, PCR thermocycler, incubators and laminar flow cabinet.
